Born in Virginia in 1930, throughout her life she faced quite a few daunting situations. All odds notwithstanding, she continued doggedly and completed her Ph.D. in Public Administration when she was 70 years old! Mathematics was, however, Gladys' forte and her prowess in it played a crucial role in the scientific discovery that would shake the very foundations of the earth.
At the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Gladys painstakingly calculated the orbital paths of satellites. The accuracy and precision of that work were major keys to developing the Global Positioning System or GPS. Without the ground-breaking calculations done by Gladys, GPS technology today just wouldn't be.
Gladys West's story is a powerful reminder that brilliance can come from unexpected places and that determination and hard work can overcome any obstacle.
